America's healthcare system isn't just one of the most iniquitous in the world it is, in terms of overall benefits delivered for money spent, one of the most inefficient in the world. THAT contrived and enduring inefficiency is EXACTLY where the profit lies and helps to explain why the hapless Mr Thompson, a prime perpetrator and beneficiary of maintaining that inefficiency, met his maker that day.

Going back a couple of hundred years in the UK and the US your house was left to burn down if it didn't have the bought and paid for fire insurance marks on the outside until municipal fire services were formed. Some 'bright spark' eventually realised that it both was socially and morally responsible to ensure that it made perfect sense that ALL buildings were afforded protection and the costs for doing so were socialised. Oh how America's moved on since then....
