  1. Banks, in theory, should be making greater profits thanks to the sizable interest rate disparities between borrowers and savers. In the UK the big banks are offering p*ss poor rates to savers generally overall - high headline rates usually include a catch - and borrowers are being caned. Higher rates are out there of course, but not usually from UK based lenders to the UK market.

  2. DeBeers keeps its profits up by strictly regulating supply. Release it all in one go and their value would drop like a stone...pardon the pun.
