It's also worth noting that the globe is becoming greener according to NASA satellite data from over the decades thanks to these CO2 increases especially at desert margins.

What used to be called 'weather' is now called 'climate change'. The former largely untameable and unpredictable, a force of Nature, and the latter apparently controllable, preventable and apparently man-made. Capitalism can be a dynamic force for positive or negative change, but the one thing that is common to either is the ability of some to monetize and profit, often significantly, from those changes if enough people buy into them.

The electricity metering reference is an interesting one here. From salt to corn to fossil fuels governments will tax whatever they think they can get away with basically and those who get to own and control those things will endeavour to maximize the price they can charge for them at a price the populace and so-called 'market' will bear in cahoots with government. All the better if those things are deemed to be fundamental to our existence and used by pretty much everyone. There's a reason why electricity in India is about 0.05p per Kw/h and in the UK it's currently around 34p on average, nevermind the additional standing charge.

@mikelloyd520 Again according to NASA a quarter to half of the Earth's entire vegetated lands have shown a significant increase in greening over the last 35 years, so whilst I'm sure the Chinese are actively doing their bit I'm sure there are also other factors at play here.

There's that famous US interview with Al Gore and Richard Branson where the interviewer asks Gore whether he's a prophet and, quick as a flash, Branson chips in with, 'how do you spell prophet?'.

My thoughts exactly. Naive in the extreme.

If you can conflate pollution and environmental degradation, both of which are often visible and undeniable, with the notion of man made climate change which is tenuous and debatable at best then you're more than halfway there with the majority it seems.

@tommyrotton9468 The problem isn't that there aren't any good arguments for renewables or finding more sustainable, less damaging, cleaner ways of living, it's that the arguments are usually disingenuous, often propagated by people with an identifiable self-interest and are nearly always boiled down to a simple either or. All nuance, like in so many aspects of our lives today, has been lost, mainstream debate crushed and 'the science' apparently settled.

Like sawing your leg off before you embark upon a gruelling marathon in the hope that your competition will be 'inspired' to do the same in the interest of fairness. DUMB...AS....F*CK.

To be fair, and not that I agree with it, but the key legislation was actually passed in 2008 with an overwhelming parliamentary majority and with only 5 dissenters. I think he shouldn't labour this point in his argument even though I happen to agree with him.
