Patrick is living proof that people often pay a price for their non-conformity - particularly in the immediate sense - and why the path of least resistance is so often most people's first choice. The fact that there might be unforseen negative consequences for making that choice and only 'potentially' positive ones for those who do doubtless informs these on-balance choices. It is, in effect, the choice between the tangible and the intangible, instant guaranteed gratification vs delayed unguaranteed gratification.
