Difference being most EU tariffs are either long established ie to protect what's already long been there or apply to certain areas at certain times for certain reasons ie they weren't put up suddenly and conspicuously en masse in the opening salvo of what appears to mark the declaration by the US of a global trade war. Furthermore, Trump's tariffs aren't there necessarily to protect existing US industries but more to protect the interests of a certain financialized constituency.

The US, not least its consumers, as far as I see it, has had a super sweet deal up until now and can afford to run a constant significant trade deficit thanks to the global demand for its bits of paper and debt. This helps it keep domestic inflation under control as it sucks in these cheap imports and effectively export its inflation when it gets too high. Why jeopardize this?

The predatory neoliberal US oligarchy, moreso even than others elsewhere in developed nations, have essentially come to view the majority of their citizens purely as consumer units. The American 'market' is one of THE primary drivers of the US economy and 'they' are entirely disinterested as to the welfare of those people as actual sentient thinking individuals and are merely concerned with their propensity to consume en masse ad nauseam.

The US instigated, European backed war in Ukraine has been a disaster for Europe. Whether this was always the plan or it's just Trump taking lemons and making lemonade is a moot point. The end result for Europe is the same...
