  2. Venezuela, despite being one of the richest countries in South America prior to Chavez coming to power, was one of the most unequal. This situation, of course, suited America just fine as it and its corporations effectively controlled its 'private' oil industry aided and abetted by a Venezuelan elite. Chavez's subsequent nationalisation and wealth distribution inevitably led to highly punitive, hugely destructive US sanctions as they no longer got their disproportionately generous cut of Venezuela's oil riches.

ANY of these countries, assuming they've got something the US wants, be it resource-wise or for geopolitical reasons, either toes the line or they will be sanctioned until they scream and comply via a compliant domestic elite. Madeline Albright said it all when she said that half a million dead Iraqi children as a result of US sanctions was a price worth paying for regime change in Iraq.
