Everybody should know that the iconic English Big Ben Tower was built by the French Normand Guillaume le conquérant in the 11th century when French Normands conquered England at the battle of Hastings and the old English anglo saxon language became infused with the French dialect "Langue d'Oil' that the normands spoke. French then became the language of england Royals, Aristocracy AND middle class for over a century. Essentially today's English is a mix of Anglo Saxon, French and German. The Normands contemporary to Guillaume le conquérant where 4th generation French descended from mixed mariage between Bretons French and Scandinaves ancestors whose language they no longer spoke.
