The LEGACY of COLONIALISM is GOOD and POSITIVE in MANY CASES. IT developped many countries. The FRENCH especially built quality long lasting great infrastructures in South East Asia that still live on 100 years later. Phnom Penh is entirely French built and had been the center of Cambodian life for more than a century long past after independence. That is not evil. The Vietnamese embraced many of the French colonial culture, including bread, coffee, latin writting of Vietnamese script, and many other wonderful French traditions. The English colonialism balance sheet is far more negative. That is why you cannot prejudice all colonialisms. China's doing in Africa is also colonialism, make no mistake about it. It has all the hallmarks of European colonialism in africa. Don't you know the France-Afrique was a long working alliance that worked well for decades better than without it. Hypocrite Chinese don't try to give lessons using lies.

@Eric-d2s1z "which removes the language from its roots." , not the case for Vietnamese language which is not mandarin but was forced to be written from chinese characters because of Chinese colonialism in Vietnam before French Indochina. Practicality Chinese was written and Vietnamese was only spoken, but thanks to French monks who transcribed vietnamese into a written language, the current vietnamese latin alphabet was born. It was a huge chance for Vietnam because up to then the chinese language could not capture the spoken vietnamese. So it saved the Vietnamese language and gave it its own efficient written alphabet. This then opened Vietnam to the West markets long before China. Vietnamese scholars became proficient in latin languages like French back then the most important western language. For a long time Vietnam's elite was more advanced than Chinese and Vietnamese exported goods to Europe. All of it thanks to colonialism, without it, vietnamese language would have diminished in importance replaced by mandarin.
