When a formerly powerful country shows weaknesses on the international stage, its dominion will no longer respect it, simple as that. Russian replaced France because of the void it left, not because it wanted to take France sphere of influence. The animals who lives in these regions of the world only respect a strong overlord. That is basic common sense.
