It's probably a matter of Matpat not getting into enough Lovecraft and cosmic horror that his imagination isn't up to the task of coming up with something basic, like aliens.

Just the small thing, the Bloop was thought to have been a glacial shift, which would have made a massive sound like that underwater. And not to make things any scarier, but there are "dark" patches in space. Just massive areas devoid of stars or any other light that just float out there without any clue as to what's going on in them.

In the "Necronamicon", by Donald Tyson, there is one particular instance where a symbol is etched on a moon and if you possess a creature in view of it and force them to look at the symbol, they will immediately kill themselves. There's a celestial sort of power over it, this giant rock in space that has some kind of knowledge etched into it and the power it has over the planets it resides over. It's all very HP Lovecraft, for sure!

In expanded Lovecraft mythos, the stuff that other people wrote based on his work, the moon always has a presence. In the Necronamicon by Donald Tyson, a distant moon had forbidden symbols etched into it that you could see from another planet. Looking at it caused the being that saw the symbol to kill themselves immediately.

I always called it "Ri-lay". The links between all the other stories and authors is usually referred to ass the "Cthulhu Mythos", which is better than "universe".

To get back to the point of the TYPE of person that has the advantage, it shows how over-thinking can be a worse enemy here. People more ignorant or less interested in such concepts have a higher level of resistance to it. Believe it or not, the same kind of concepts work in mysticism as well. The less someone believes in spells and curses the less likely they would therefore be to fall victim to them because the belief in such things was necessary to give them power. It kinda falls in the same wheelhouse of people who don't believe in hypnotism can't be hypnotized.

You should check out Deusdaecon Reviews, he covers the conjuring movies and chronicles the exploits of the Warrens. He's actually pretty upset that Ed and Loraine got a lot of credit for other people that were there on the case as well, and putting in a lot more work.

The thing is, scientists MIGHT take the precaution to prevent something from getting out of hand (the intelligence explosion), but a corporation, with profit in mind more than ethics and safety, they would have the dangerous genius that builds something for them that DOES start behaving out of scope. See the algorithm issues that Google and Facebook have constantly. This is where some real danger is.

Vergil is cursed because he was born before... wasn't the whole point of the sacrifice to be a clean slate before and after!?

I thought the crowns were just used for flying, but... it seems strange, considering helium and other such agents would exist at that time.

Interesting. The Mandela Catalog was the one that really got to me too.
