Ok, I'm not sure if you're doing this intentionally but Trump specifically said Europe could provide the security, also all the equipment he mentioned was what was already given.

@avon001 Why would he? Russian couldn't take anything from the USA by force, especially not after getting its teeth kicked in by Ukraine.

@kieronparr3403 Right now, it seems like he's way more interested in getting China and Russia at a table so that he can try to convince them that all three need to stop investing in arms (since they're the only competition they all have) and start focusing on fixing their economies instead. While he's interest in stopping this war, he seems to be thinking more about the big picture. If there's a major war, like a huge, global war of some kind on the same scale of the World Wars, the three guys rivals are the USA, Russia and China. If he can assure that all three WON'T start fighting and agree to dial back their military investments for the sake of long-term sustainability, that'll be bigger than the Ukraine conflict, which he might just fix at the same time.

@ Hydrogen needs a bit more time to cook before we could make a full commitment to converting over. I'm hoping by the time we're fully space-faring we'll have it figured out.

It would be stupid because then their prices wouldn't compete with cheaper alternatives that would gladly pick up the US market. Also, companies that outsource for chesp Chinese labor will move rather than deal with tariffs.

@PomaReign Oh, I know that. Besides, the tariffs will encourage manufacturers in China to consider other locations too, like Vietnam.

You do realize they import goods from us too, right? So if first the importer is taxed, then the consumer, they are paying the tariffs.

@ It's not exactly the same thing, no. Taking a stance to negotiate is not the same as surrender, it's a shame a lot of people seem to feel that way. A lot of people are of the mindset that you either win or you lose with no nuance. After being invaded, Zelensky COULD have met with Russia and started negotiating terms, but we'll never know how that could have turned out either. Right now, it's clear deals can be made, because that's exactly what Trump is doing for the two of them. Surrendering would have been just laying down and handing their sovereignty over, something that if it isn't clear now, wasn't even the goal Russia ever had. They want what Ukraine has, not necessarily Ukraine itself. And if Trump gets his way, that's what Russia will get too. Some of the wealth, Ukraine keeps its sovereignty and the USA gets a deal out of it as well. Making it a three way profitable venture for everyone involved. Yes, even Ukraine. Because they'll never be part of NATO, but they can partner with the country that is essentially NATO.

At least he's considering a new US market on energy, but I can't help but think this is a way to try and drive a wedge between the US and Russian negotiations.

We're all jumping to conclusions here. The three of them meet soon and that's when we'll really know what's being worked out. There's a chance this is just to ensure that Ukraine does hand over the resources to the USA, Putin is in a pretty rough position so he'll have to take a deal where he can get it. So all of this could just be meant to make people sweat a bit before we work it out between them.

It sounded more like he was WAY more interested in getting Russia and China down at a table with him for a talk about prolonged peace between the three major, global rivals. This might be taking priority over the Ukraine conflict.

@ARKHAM367 No-one misunderstands them, but we also understand they're falling apart economically. China had to basically get a bunch of factories from other countries utilizing it's low labor costs and join global trade to survive after nearly death spiraling and Trump's tariffs could put a halt to that. Russia is desperate for some kind of bailout after the conflict with Ukraine has been more costly than they anticipated and they still haven't gotten any of the resources they were clearly making a move for. The CCP getting involved on Russia's side of things only goes to show that not only are what they sitting on valuable, but it clearly infringes on the market China has cornered for it's long-term survival. Right now, everyone is in the best position to sit down and TALK, because they're either A) hemorrhaging money they can't afford or B) are about to lose their sustainability in the global trade market by losing the biggest consumer-base and all of their production support.
