  1. Pushing down illiteracy rates is crucial for a society to become advanced, competitive and for people to understand each other. It should be the top priority for these countries in Asia and Africa, rather than spending cash on religious events or traditions. That's the type of foreign aid that can be defended.

Religious teaching and superstitious books that don't teach basic scientific, objective and factual concepts for the future generations is a bad thing. It's common in these religiously dominated countries such as Pakistan. I don't know if that was the case here, but it should either way be discouraged if you want to create a knowledge-based and smart population.
