...nah. The rich 1% and a few profitable corporations who dominates the market makes up for like 40% of the emissions and pollution globally, if I recall correctly. Slightly decreasing the population rate wouldn't change our lifestyle, patterns, the influence of the rich, and the deregulated system that enables excessive consumption and irresponsibility.

Excessive consumption and a lack of policies that protects the nature, biodiversity and the climate is the problem. The damage to the economy can occur in a communist state trying to industrialize and mass produce certain products so the workers can stay alive, or in an unregulated capitalist system where the profit motive takes precedence with CEOs and corporate lobbyists controls the state. We need a balance. An effective capitalist framework with regulations that protects the people, the environment, and that enables a good welfare system.

People tend to have more control and freedom in a capitalist system if we take a look at the world today and historically. So your statement is quite misleading. The people control very little under socialism. Not to mention the lack of opportunities, poverty, shortages and famines that socialist doctrines almost always enables. We need a balance. No system in itself ensures that the climate is protected. Specific regulations and a direct determination to maintain a clean nature, a decent economic growth and high standards of living, would be ideal and would definitely lead to good effects for everybody. Some countries are taking this seriously. The oil rich countries along with China, Russia, China and India, are not taking it as seriously.
