Daniel is too small and skinny for football! It would either be soccer or baseball for him but it is the fall season in the movie which is when soccer is normally played in this country.

@Steve50663 Not True! It actually took off big time in the 70-80s! Remember the NY Cosmos and Pele. You do know the NASL were selling out stadiums in the 70s and early 80s until the league finally folded because of bad management. And the world cups in Spain 82 and Mexico 86 were actually quite popular although still not mainstream and then the US qualified for the 1990 World Cup which really gave it that impetus. High School soccer was quite big. Not as big as American Football but still big especially among the immigrant community. Soccer was always very popular at the amateur level in this country because of so many immigrants but great players just lost interest at the college level because there was no real professional league in the US! The rise of the "soccer mom" also started in the 80s. Daniel LaRusso came from New Jersey were there is a huge hispanic and Italian community so most likely he learned how to play soccer there. California especially Los Angeles is full of Mexican immigrants and they play soccer so no surprise they showed it in Karate Kid in 1984.

@Steve50663 You are wrong! I played high school soccer in the mid- 80s. And youth soccer was all over the place.
