@gsvick Yugoslavia could reasonably be counted as West European. It's not that far to the east and it wasn't a part of the Eastern Bloc during socialist times.

@drharnsaft1005 It seems to me that Greeks and Turks share a lot of culture so that doesn't seem like a reason to exclude Turkey due to culture, whereas geography would seem to lead to the exclusion of Cyprus. You could argue religion but then that would also bring into question whether Albania and Bosnia are culturally European.

Though I think a lot of people consider Romania and Moldova as Eastern European even though Romanian is a Romance language, not a Slavic language.

Turkey at least has a little bit of land (East Thrace) in Europe whereas Cyprus is geographically entirely outside of Europe.
2
Should Cyprus be excluded too then?
2
@drharnsaft1005 What precisely is the criterion?
2
What about Moldova? Also, what about other language groups?
2
Turkey at least has a bit of land in Europe (East Thrace) whereas Cyprus is wholly outside of Europe geographically.

It's pretty ironic that the literal Eastern Realm (Austria / Österreich) is actually Western.

@ablorenz Maybe it should be renamed to Zentralreich. That would be an awesome name. :)

"not European at least culturally" Cultural categories are kind of nebulous. What do you think makes Turkey not European culturally?
1
@bailey2103-3 "its markets, foods, religion, clothing, and other cultural characteristics" When it comes to religion, that could be used to say that Albania and Bosnia are not culturally European. As for food and clothing, are those that different from e.g. Greece?
1
I think some might consider it being Eastern either a) because it's Slavic or b) because it used to be socialist (though not a part of the Eastern Bloc).
1
"Well lets not pretend east and west division of europe has anything to do with actual geography( Finland)" You could justify that geographically by also considering Northern and Southern Europe separate from Eastern and Western Europe. That way you can also count Greece as Southern rather than Eastern. You could also count Central Europe separately though that would make things quite messy.

Cyprus is geographically entirely outside of Europe but it was still included.

@andriusgimbutas3723 Wut?

@mariosathens1 Islands are still usually counted as part of regions like Europe or Asia if they're close enough to the continent. E.g. most people would say that Japan is in Asia even though it doesn't include any continental mainland. Similarly Cyprus is quite close to the coast of Anatolia so I would say it's geographically in Asia.
