  1. "for not taking the opportunity to transition to renewable energy when they could" It's not that there was a such a decision or missed opportunity. It's just that such shift isn't easy and wind and solar have become viable fairly recently. The intermittent nature of those renewables has required some kind of peaking power to make up shortfalls for when there isn't that much wind or sunlight. Natural gas works well for such peaking power. It's at least partially the shift to renewables that has made Europe reliant on gas.
