  2. For an autocrat like Putin the centralization of violence can be more dangerous. If his top general decides to become the leader and stage a coup there might not be anyone to prevent it. Better to create parallel competing structures to ensure that you remain in power.

  3. The classic solution is to divide people under you into competing factions which you balance against each other. I suspect that's one of the reasons for Putin using PMCs parallel to regular military. Prigozhin can't easily stage a coup because people like Gerasimov and Shoigu wouldn't allow that but similarly Prigozhin can make it more difficult for Gerasimov to stage a coup
