@del7723 : "There is nothing more harmful then travelling by plane." Yes, there is, namely traveling the same distance by car.

@kuhndj67 : Though it should be said that in many places planes are too cheap and even artificially cheap (not sure about Australia). Often you might not have to pay VAT or sales tax on an international flight and the kerosene for the planes might be tax free as well. Ideally plane trips should include the same taxes as another services and additionally the fuel should be taxed based on its carbon content. That might make trains more economically viable in comparison.

@del7723 : Googled it and it indeed seems that cars indeed have higher emissions per passenger km assuming one is driving alone (which I was assuming in my comment).

@del7723 : It was just a small comment on the "nothing more harmful". People do in fact at least some times drive alone.

@uglyduckling81 : I didn't know before this that Australia doesn't have any nuclear power plants. That's pretty surprising. Is there a law against that or something or is coal just too cheap?

If you make a long transcontinental trip, the emissions are going to be quite high almost regardless of the mode of transport (though electric trains probably have lower emissions per passenger km than planes).

@RWBHere : Yeah. :D Seriously though, for some trips driving would actually be a viable alternative but worse for the environment. I've heard that after 9-11 a lot of flights in the US were substituted with driving. That also might have statistically lead to almost as many extra deaths as the 9-11 strike itself since flying is statistically safer. Of course, transcontinental flights won't be substituted with car trips.
