  1. Note that the power company has in any case to ability to cut off all of your electricity and not just your AC. Maybe strain on the electric grid necessitating rolling blackouts is rare but it can happen. These kinds of deals can at least in principle help the grid operator such that blackouts might not be needed when they otherwise would have.
