  1. A couple of thoughts: 1) I'm under the impression that one of the pros of WWII era tank destroyers was getting a lot of them quickly to service. If you need a vehicle with a gun that's big enough to deal with the heavier tanks that the opponent has, one thing you can do is just use an existing tank chassis and you can put a bigger gun on it by forgoing the turret. It's going to lose the flexibility of a turret but you can churn out more of them quickly because a vehicle without a turret is cheaper to make and by reusing an existing chassis there's no delay that producing a totally new vehicle would have. Now in peacetime armies can take their sweet time in building up their strength so there's less of need to use a shortcut like this which is totally different from WWII when you needed your tank destroyers yesterday. 2) Having a lot of frontal armor is less relevant when you're facing anti-tank missiles which can strike from above rather than from the front.
