E.g. Americans (who could be replaced by any other nationality here) who come to Japan are a self-selected group who are much more likely to like anime than the average American. The Japanese people you meet in Japan are likely not a similarly selected group.

2:07 "stress accent languages and pitch accent languages" And then there are languages like Swedish which have both.

One of my colleagues, who's a Swedish speaking Finn, was told in Sweden that he speaks the language well even though it's his native language.

Or be an accountant in some other company than Hertz.

Before this comment I didn't realize that the computer game and the anime set in the universe the original Cyberpunk tabletop RPG. Previously, I thought they were called that because they fall into the wider cyberpunk genre.

1:25 Squat toilets can have some advantages. The squatting posture may sometimes make defecation easier. Also in public toilets, the seat may sometimes be dirty and make sitting on it unappealing (even if it weren't an actual hygienic risk).

@NinaNooneknows Yes, that's probably the reason. I mostly just wanted to point out how "you speak <language X> well" doesn't necessarily feel as intended.

That too but there's nothing strange about that.

This doesn't always work, though. See e.g. Metatron's annoyance with exaggerated Italian accent.

There isn't necessarily a need to get completely rid of a foreign accent. It can have its own charm. Think of e.g. a slight French accent in English.

@CosmicDoom47 How does the interplay between those work? Do the tones become more pronounced in stressed syllables?

Really?

I suspect "strengths" might be similarly difficult for the Japanese.

Can you buy just 1 ticket if you're willing to stand?

Isn't "kuso" a fairly mild swear word?
1
The automatic translation in the comments translates that as "kung fu".

It seems to me that the Japanese style here also has a little bit higher pitch on average than the American style. I wonder if that only applies to women.

What do mushroom farmers sound like?

"Especially at the thought of a waiter actually pulling that in Japan." But it wasn't the waiter who said that.

@1nwb-4dnws If you follow the conversation closely, you can notice that it's not the waiter who says "shut up" at the end. The customer ordering is to left of the mic, the customer repeatedly saying "datte" (and who says "shut up" at the end) is to the right of the mic, and the waiter is behind the mic (except in the very beginning when they call him). It may be bit hard to follow who is who. Maybe dogen should've differentiated them better somehow.
