  1.  @LichuStar64  Well, I don't think they effectively "give" banks money either. Usually, central banks put new money into circulation by buying some kinds of bonds. These bonds are bought at market rates so the seller doesn't receive a gift from the central bank.

  4.  @LichuStar64  "this tells me the money somehow remains with the banks" But to get that money they have to sell something of equal value or they borrow it meaning they have to pay it back. Also, at least in the Eurozone the ECB actually imposes negative interest on bank reserves meaning the banks actually have to pay the ECB if they just hoard reserves.
