  1. 2:00 One thing to note is that a trade surplus is not necessarily a good sign for Russia. It could be but it could also mean that sanctions prevent useful imports. Thus their exports may just cause them to stockpile forex that they can't easily spend on something useful.

  2. "russia never really left the central planning model ... they just gave it a new coat of paint" This is a bit of an exaggeration. You can at least start a business in Russia. In the Soviet Union private businesses weren't allowed aside from some small exceptions like hairdressers (I think).
