  1. This kind of thing isn't that unusual. I think foreigners can also serve e.g. in the US armed forces and it can be a route to citizenship. France even has a separate corps (Foreign Legion) for such soldiers. I think even the Indian armed forces employ Gurkhas from Nepal so even India is no stranger to employing foreigners in the military.
