"tonight I saw first time all the lights switched off in the road where I used to go for a run" I'd venture to guess that it's not due to the electricity prices but some other reason like electrical failure or a mistake.

@meinardsl "that one town in Ukraine near Belarusian border is still a horrifying reminder of what can happen" But even with this one severe incident nuclear power is statistically much safer than most alternatives. Similarly for hydropower one single incident (Banqiao, 1975) killed far more people than all nuclear accidents combined but most people are not demanding a phase-out of hydropower. "Also, the region would still be entirely reliant on importing the fuel for the reactors and should that supply chain become unreliable due to a conflict or change of heart from suppliers the potential for disaster would be significantly worse than current energy crisis." No, it would be far less of a problem. Firstly, uranium is cheap compared to the energy content it has so it's much easier to find alternative suppliers as they don't have to come from nearby. Secondly, nuclear plants usually store something like a year's worth of fuel on their premises which leaves a lot of time to sort out any supply chain hiccups.

@gropatapouf5998 "I've read that our Gaz tanks can't take on a whole winter, just like a few weeks..." When full they should last about 2.5 months on average if only the storage is used (but Europe does still have other sources of gas like North Africa, the Netherlands, and Norway). During the winter usage is higher than average so it might last less than that but with the other sources and possible rationing it won't run out during this winter. "have you heard about the pipeline "Asian force 2"? It's being built right now and will convey the Gaz that had to be sold to Europe to... China instead" If you mean Power of Siberia 2 it's supposed to begin construction in 2024 and be operational in 2030 which is quite some time from now.

@sdrc92126 "Cold kills much more than heat. A warmer planet is good thing" Heat kills plenty. With cold you can at least wear warm clothing but in hot weather there's a limit to how much clothing can help. Sufficiently hot and humid weather will kill regardless of clothing unless you can sit inside an air conditioned building.

@sdrc92126 Yes. If e.g. the wet bulb temperature exceeds 35 °C you will eventually die in it if you don't have AC. However, with enough clothes you can survive even in the Antarctic.

@JuhoLankila "If i remember this right, it would only account for 25-30% of the energy we would have bought from Russia" I'm not sure what you are including in that number. It will almost entirely cover the (halted) direct electricity imports from Russia. Gas was only about 5% of Finland's energy production so that doesn't change the equation significantly. Maybe you're also including coal imports from Russia but those are easier to source from other places (though that will still increase the cost).

@morzh1978 "its Alstom or Siemens made turbine just broke during initial tests, and repairs or replacements would take many months with no clear solution in sight. Welcome to rolling blackouts!" Olkiluoto 3 is back in test usage so clearly it wasn't a big problem. The 100% capacity test usage should begin at the end of this month.

@SES-Shepard "Isn't the reactor still some way off from actually becoming active?" No, it's been in test usage at partial power for some time now. The full power test usage is scheduled to start at the end of this month (i.e. in a few days). Maybe you're thinking of when the normal commercial operation should begin which is scheduled to happen in December. However, it's already producing electricity to the grid for some time.

@SES-Shepard It's probably visible in the sense that without it your bill would likely be even higher. We need to remember that it still only offsets the loss of direct electricity imports from Russia. There is still the fact that gas imports from Russia have ceased, coal is likely now more expensive than before, and the countries that Finland can export electricity to have a higher need for it now. Btw, do you have a fixed price contract or a market rate contract?
1
@SES-Shepard I also have a fixed contract. I was under the impression that my building doesn't have a smart meter or at least I think it didn't have. I have to check again at some point. I got a 2 year contract which will expire in April meaning I got pretty lucky. I suspect that fixed contracts are going to be more expensive then so a market rate might make more sense.

@morzh1978 There have been several issues. I don't remember all of them. But as of writing this comment it's running at 1590 MW which is already quite close to the full power. There isn't currently a problem which would prevent that usage and take months to fix. There isn't a reason to expect blackouts barring further problems that haven't yet appeared.
