1:08:10 It's not the case that "most of the world" recognizes Kosovo as a part of Serbia. It's recognition is split very close to 50%/50%. Last I checked there was still a very slight majority for the recognition of its independence (among UN members).

@Cl0ckcl0ck OK, but that was just a referendum on the association agreement, not on membership as such. Also, the association agreement later passed after some negotiation.

"The Netherlands already had a referendum which showed that the Dutch people don't want them in the EU" What referendum are you referring to?

@ian x "If Ukraine had joined NATO, as seems likely" It doesn't seem likely at all. The unresolved territorial dispute would have meant that Ukraine wouldn't have been able to join NATO, not for a long time at least.

"You can't pick and choose which independence to support." If that's the case then should Russia's recognition of LPR & DPR last year compel them to also recognize Kosovo as independent? Or do Greenwald's demands of consistency only apply to the EU & NATO and not Russia?

@ericaugust1501 Fair enough. However, I have to say that while you can compare the examples of Kosovo and Crimea, it's not clear to me that the same would apply to Donetsk and Luhansk. I haven't at least seen the same kind of polling data that we have on Crimean from Donetsk or Luhansk so it's not clear whether a majority of those regions wanted separation from Ukraine.

@ericaugust1501 "observing history, it tends to usually only be small groups willing to fight but who also generally represent a bigger majority" You can also find fighters from a large enough minority (e.g. 30%), especially if they get paid to fight.
