  2.  @cow_tools_  "Why would they want to join." You spoke about "NATO's expansion". I assumed you meant expansion that has already happened. Clearly, those countries that have joined NATO wanted to join (the latest being Montenegro and North Macedonia). Should NATO have rejected their membership.

  3.  @cow_tools_  "Those countries are not near the border." OK, the members bordering Russia are Poland (joined in 1999) and the three Baltic states (joined in 2004). So to answer your question why NATO expanded there is that those countries wanted to join. (Norway also borders Russia but that's technically not an expansion because Norway is a founding member.)

  5. A gas pipeline is probably not that harmful to the local environment there. Also, I think Nord Stream 2 has already been fully laid and it's mostly waiting for regulatory approval in Germany.
