The Japanese economy began to decline when computers, and smartphones became more and more popular. A smartphone can replace a number of electronic devices, like calculators, cameras, electronic organizers, televisions, tape/CD music players, analog phones, video camcorder, optical disc players(DVD-ROM), electronic typewriters, radios, voice recorder, scanner, electronic calendar, etc. Japan made a lot of those electronic devices, but with the advent of the smartphone, and computers all of these things became redundant.

That's because software engineering is neglected in Japan. Only hardware engineers get respect in big Japanese corporations and companies. Most of the software end of it is outsourced.

Japan lead the way in semiconductor technology back in the late 1970s through the 1980s with NEC and other Japanese firms in the forefront. They had a lot of different computer manufacturers in Japan in the 1980s, but most of them never became mainstream, like MSX, NEC PC-8801, NEC PC-9801, Fujitsu FM Towns Computer, and the Sharp 68000. All of these platforms were replaced with Microsoft O.S. based computers using the x86 architecture.

@sangwoo9686 ARM is a fabless chip company which licenses out its intellectual property to companies, like Samsung, Apple, Renesas, Google, and others. Samsung pays licensing rights to produce ARM chips. It isn't South Korean technology.

@sangwoo9686 ARM is not a GPU company, ARM owns the right to a RISC CPU architecture, just Intel owns the rights to CISC CPU architecture. Just because Samsung makes a laptop computer doesn't mean the main components of that computer is made by Samsung. Samsung buys AMD and Intel CPUs to make those computers, so the core technology in all computers is based on American companies, like AMD and Intel.

The US lost its industrial capacity to wage a pier to pier war. In war, the country that can produce more weapons wins, look at World War 2. The US was able to produce enough weapons and equipment to supply themselves, and all of their allies. Can the US do this now? The US is begging South Korea for 155mm artillery shells, because it can't produce enough basic weapons as these.

@michaellim4165 Samsung buys chemicals from Japanese companies to produce their semiconductors. Most of the chips S.Korean firms produce are based on ARM, and ARM is a British chip company which licenses out their RISC based architecture to other companies for licensing fees.

@ryanjohnson4515 You still need to produce hardware to fight a war whether that be military drones, electronic jammers, guided missiles, fixed wing aircraft, helicopters, main battle tanks, aifvs, APCs, etc. The software is used in conjunction with military hardware. Drones can be programmed to find targets, and that is software being used to control military equipment. Ground, air, and sea assets can be integrated into a single command structure. That is software, but without the hardware it means very little.

@sangwoo9686 Like I said, ARM is a fabless chip company, they license out their CPU architecture to other companies, like Samsung. Samsung produces the ARM chips with a license from ARM. For every chip ARM cpu Samsung produces, they have to pay a licensing fee for every chip that is produced. Just like Samsung and every other computer company has to pay a licensing fee to use Microsoft Windows. They also have to purchase a AMD or Intel CPU. Since AMD and Intel don't license other companies to produce their CPUs, the users of those chips have to buy them directly from AMD and Intel. ARM doesn't make CPUs, so they let you use their intellectual property for a licensing fee.
