There is a countermeasure for it, smoke. I can't believe the Russians couldn't figure that out. Most modern tanks have smoke grenades.

@dubious_potat4587 That's why the Russians developed the Arena APS back in the 1990s. It uses a doppler radar, a computer, and a explosive dispenser to shoot down rockets and missiles.

@dubious_potat4587 I am sure you can mount a Doppler radar on a mbt to scan 65 ° to 75 °. The current system the Russians have on T-80 mbts scan 20 °, so it isn't effective against Javelin FGM-148. The Javelin is a top attack missile, so the radar would have to scan at a higher elevation to use countermeasures, like IR smoke or a explosive dispenser.

@bighands69 IR smoke grenades can block thermal imaging.

@bighands69 Most modern battle tanks have IR smoke grenade dispensers. I am not talking about regular smoke, I am talking about chemical smoke.

@bighands69 You can detect flying objects in the air with doppler radars, and the Russians have one called the Arena active protection system. It doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure out how to use it correctly to detect Javelin missiles. You just have to scan at a higher elevation, because a Javelin is a top attack missile. The trajectory of the missile is predictable, and you can program that into the computer. The radar is a sensor, and that data is fed into the computer. The computer will determine which countermeasures will be used, it could be IR smoke grenades, or using the Arena APS.

@bighands69 You can use doppler radars as sensors to detect javelin missiles flying in the air. Then, you can deploy IR smoke as a countermeasure.

@bighands69 Any other military would have figured out how to make a countermeasure for a top attack IR image lock missile. There are a number of ways you can counter it, you can use sensors, like doppler radars scanning -10 ° to 75 °. When the projectile gets to a certain distance, counter measures, like IR smoke grenades from a mortar, or explosive dispenser can be used to protect the tank. Any junior level engineer can figure out this problem, it isn't hard. I am surprised the Russians couldn't figure this out when they have a system like Arena APS. The Russians are really incompetent.
