The US relies on China for a lot of things, like APIs for meds, legacy chips, circuit boards, rare earth minerals, car parts, parts for various machines, chemical compounds, various types of electronics, lithum batteries, monitors, etc. There is a trade surplus, so the US imports more than what is exported to China. The US needs China more than China needs the US. They can put these high tariffs on China, but most of these things cannot be produced in the US. Thus, they will keep importing it even with these high tariffs.

  2.  @stevev4863  The cost of living is much higher in the US. That's the reason why manufacturing left the US back in the 1970s. No one said, you cannot produce stuff in the US. You can hire people in the US and hire people. Why doesn't many people do it? Because wages, energy, rent, health insurance, etc are all more expensive. You can produce stuff in the US, but very few people outside of the US would buy it.
