  1. This is the second time I've watched this particular chapter, but have a question. How is it that with all the other aircraft in line and waiting in line , how did this particular plane get so much more icing and obvious ice sheets than all the others? Just bad luck? Still terrible.

  2.  @filanfyretracker  Considering the airports your referring to are international hubs, for sure. Plus all it takes is having two major runways and the airport between them. Then the plane may have to taxi all the way around the actual airport to get to the right runway. They are flying giants, no doubt. No matter how many times it's explained to me how those huge metal things seem to defy the laws of physics. It's still awesome they get off the ground.

  3. I don't imagine a walk around could have seen anything to anticipate such a thing. I know planes are just riveted sheets of sheet metal and obviously eligible for stress fracture, but man, that was a terrible event. Very sad for the deaths and kudos to the crew doing what they did to make it come together. As for the manufacturer, we know there is always cost of construction. Saving a buck. I know planes have to be as light as possible. So sheet metal thicknesses are probably factor of cost. But not when lives are in the balance.

  4. Another case of poor and economic judgement call on the airline. Seems they should have battery backup for engine loss where electronics are essential for information to the pilot and power to controls are created by that engine. Or, a generator built in to other engines to compensate. Such an unnecessary loss of life, that could have been prevented. 😔

  5. In one of your vids, you brought fuel weight and how it effects landing up several times. How often do aircraft dump fuel to reduce weight for a more safe landing? Just wondering how much jet fuel is wasted in that event. If it's done at all. Thanks.

  6. Your tug idea is similar to what I was thinking, cept I was thinking about a manned tug. Like with ships. As for motors on the wheels? I was thinking,how about vanes on the hub? As the wheels fold out they spin just by air speed. So many interesting things to think about. Thanks again. Retreads on aircraft tires? Oooo, that sounds sucky. But I guess if done really well.

  7.  @hb1338  Seems like every bit of information a pilot may be able to use when an event becomes a real issue, would be so beneficial, how could they object to a camera positioned where pilots can't see. But I guess with such complex instrumentation aboard now days, they don't feel the need. But when every loss of life no doubt costs airlines millions, a few objections would be ridiculous to take heed to.

  9. It always amazes me that every time some small thing falls off of an aircraft during takeoff, for one,,and that the small piece ALWAYS, seems to find the tire of the following aircraft. Maybe they need to run a runway sweep, visually or physically, after every takeoff. I mean come on, you showed several different tire failures just with the Concord. Probably due to crap falling off planes. Very sad event. I know as a pilot this hits home to you. Mishaps with so many deaths in what u do for a living has to.   11. I do notice that you hear other commands to other planes if you're on the same frequency. That does seem kinda scary if you're not paying total attention to the call sign. Terrible happening. Between language, listening and visibility, this was totally preventable. Sad.

  12. So in other words, just because the sensors were all screwed up and indicaters were saying the planes a mess, things were still functional. At least enough to keep the plane safely in flight. Big plane, full of passengers and crew. Sure enough time for a really good pilot.

  13. I thought that's what happened before you said it. Didn't know what they hit, but sounded sure like something. And considering the very late lift off sounded logical. I'm surprised the impact to a concrete wall didn't affect the landing gear mechanism to some degree. Crazy. And all because of a seat malfunction.

  14. Does the spinning indicator show actual flap position? I noticed when you activated flaps the dial movement wasn't instantaneous. And slowed near the end of the action. Also I noticed a display that looked like the terrain from a side view, so you can see the terrain angle in respect to your angle of attack? Dial was on your right just to the left of the throttle levers. Pretty cool. I did a space shuttle fractional simulator at the flight museum in Virginia. I did terrible. Didn't realize you have to do things slow and steady. Stalled several times. I let my son take over,,,he did much better. Thanks again.

  17. Wow. Landing in freezing conditions are or seem dangerous no matter what. I can't even drive in frozen road conditions. I'd be curious how much insurance airlines pay. The case expenses must be so extreme. Between deaths and injuries and repair costs, its amazing they stay solvent. I mean accidents even this small has to create millions in payments and damages. Are pilots responsible for financial loss, to some degree? I do understand it's a learning experience as well. But, we still hear about similar accidents like this one, too often.   20. I didn't know how many unnecessary crashes happen until now. I understand mechanical issues, though those are mostly human error as well, and those are inexcusable as well. But when you have pilots that like any other people responsible for lives of others, must be at their best, during their job. Another waste of life due to human error. People put their trust in airlines. There must be responsibly from the airlines to maintain their equipment and making sure pilots are 100% each time they're on the job.   21. Maybe they should cross hatch grooves in all runways to not only run water off quicker, but give really true grip on tires. I realize that type of grooving may shorten tire life, but maybe an incident like this would be reduced. But I still stand with my original comment, seems this accident was totally caused by lack of cockpit communication and indecision. So, human error.

  23. We used to go up to the roof of the parking garage and watch take offs and landing s. I noticed cargo planes hauling butt and pulling up way before the end of the runway and doing about a 35 degree angle to get really quick altitude. I guess with no passengers, that kind of takeoff is fine? Just thought about it when you mentioned cargo flights. 🖖

  24. Man between man and machine not being in sinc, sure makes a relatively positive outcome become a terrible ending. Thankfully noone was hurt, though it could have been much worse. How do airlines compensate passengers for these types of accidents? Fly free forever? Hundred grand payoff per passenger? I mean this can be a totally traumatic incident to some frequent flyers.

  27. It's hard to believe they don't have a regular cooling system built in to these engines. Like an automobile. Mixing water into the fuel seems very sketchy. Due to fuel mixture needs. Water just does not burn well. So I wonder why no actual professional investigation? Maybe cause it's a family run airline? And money talks?   28. What else could the second pilot could have done? If he'd have grabbed the controls on his side, he'd have gotten the same results. So oh yes, it's good, in that case, there are seniority guidelines, and as a team work together to get safer results. I certainly hope they amended the , just visual, inspection of aircraft with that type of elevator components. Seems design ingenuity is sometimes less efficient, even if efficiency is it's desire. Another trial by error flight that could have gone, way so much wronger.

  30. So, was there no more problem with the tires then, or do mechanics check tires thoroughly after each run? After all, i imagine a blowout during landing isn't a good thing. But it's true, mistakes do happen. Luckily it was a light load and liftoff didn't take longer. Does sound like the first officer needed a bit more experience . Especially in keeping her eyes on runway directional indicators. Looked the me the arrows definitely swung to the left. Oh well. Glad it came out well. I'm sure she'll pay attention better,, from then on.

  31. For sure, 20,20 hindsight armchair quarterbacking is ALWAYS, easier when we're not under the stress of the failure. I remember my boy scout knot tying test. I was watching another scout and correcting him, then when it was my turn I started screwing up. Taught me a lesson for sure.

  32. Well in this case four heads were better than 3. Another thing I noticed is, isn't it interesting that when these plane do inadvertently hit the ground, they predominantly break into 3 parts. It'd be nice if they didn't break at all,,,but maybe its so survivors have an easier exit partition. Very very glad to hear noone died in this accident. But man I'll tell you. I wonder if I could ever fly again after being in that type of incident. Gonna have to watch it again, I missed the part where something broke off and got into the engine's. Always wondered why designers determine best engine location. Is it balance? More wing usage? Props too. On the nose, on the wing, behind the wings. So many different designs.   33. I've always been a helicopter lover. I really kick myself for not trying to go into rotary wing school when in the army. Oh well. My point is, I've always noticed the rotor flex from the side view as they lift off, and weight is placed on them. Id say that's a good comparison of wing flex. That too is why they build flat bed trailer trucks with an arch, so when loaded they won't have accidental bed failure with load on the. Thanks again for another cool episode.

  34. I had to laugh when you mentioned the rear mounted engines causing the rear to be heavier than the front of the plane. I pictured people walking up the stairs and the added weight causing the front end to lift off the ground. I imagine that also could make rotation to come a bit premature if not countered.   35. I'm amazed at the flight hours some of these pilots have. Is this just in seat hours? I mean at 2 hours here and 3 hours there, 7000, seems like forever. Very,very sad happening. Seems design and worker complacency makes up a big part of these incidents. When that much life is lost, unnecessarily, something must be done. Thankfully statistics show the percentage of flights that end in catastrophy are few. Anything that moves can fail.

  37. I'm not sure how many times fans have broken and cause damage, but I wonder if when they make fans, they don't do a outter perimeter ring, like i see on some AC fans. I thought this may solve the loose blade issue. That poor woman. Very sad. Can picture in my mind what she was feeling in those moments. Hard to fathom the cabin crew not seeing her quicker or even surrounding passengers. I know things were going on, but the Capt never even told people what was happening till later. Anyway, I know we tend to armchair quarterback, knowing we have never been there. Seems rhe Capt made very good decisions on that one. Concentrating on getting the plane on the ground.   39. It's ironic. You made the comment, Flying is the safest form of travel... I was going to say that too,, except with a ?, behind it. I know for the most part, that's true, but seeing how many of these," easy preventable', " accidents", do or did happen,,,,makes u wonder. Especially considering, human error, as well as mechanical, computer, and weather conditions, will always be there. I love flying, I always had the desire to fly helicopters. But when u see these videos, it makes u realize how many people in the aviation biz, don't see it as, having innocent lives in your hands. And only by being perfect at your job, can you show respect for that responsibility. We as passengers,take flying for granted. The people in the business,,,, shouldn't. For most of them, I'd say they are professional.

  41. Looked like they backed off the throttle a bit. So you're saying the left over vortex left by one plane, left a down draft or vacancy of smooth air a minute after the other plane landed? Hmmm,,,, I guess its possible, but then the sock would show erratic winds yes? You are a scientific man my friend.

  42. Sounds like they had a slightly dyslexic controller in tower. To keep announcing the wrong numbers. Thank goodness for on the ball pilots making sure they are going by their own readings and instruments. But not all of them. It's no wonder the black box information was, strangely lost. Sounds like no-one wanted to be responsible for all these failures in comm and setting irresponsibilities.

  43. Wow, just seeing this again is scary. Because I know even as little as I've flown, I've been in low visibility take offs and landing. Not being prejudice, but when you're responsible for hundreds of lives, communication is a must. And I've heard comm between tower and plane. It can be complicated at it's best. Much less with a language barrier. Hell, just dealing with services on the phone is very aggravating sometimes. And that's risking 0 lives. There definitely needs to be communication clarity when lives are at stake. Pilot's and tower personal must...practice their speech and make triple sure instructions are heard and understood.   44. But if they re only good as private flights, and making them larger defeats the purpose, it doesn't really help general population. Sorry my friend, but people who can afford a small airplane, are doctors, lawyers, Indian chiefs. Most people can't afford a private plane. As cool as these are, and as economic,,,the average person won't be able to afford one. Hell my little 85 325i, is only in my budget because it is an 85😅. Take care.

  45. Ironic isn't it. He was pretty much correct on everything making the flight safely and on time,,,i guess. Either twas all luck, or he just knew his stuff, all went well. Yet other cases, pilots did everything correctly and still had major problems and even crashed or had terrible landings. That's kismet. Glad all went well for everyones sake.

  48. Yes I think a plane landing and rolling on the runway, is a lot easier seen, than a person or animal by the pilot. My condolences to the individual and family, but he or she are obviously there by some wrong reason during a landing or take off. Sad

  49. So basically in this case, both pretty new engines failed. What sucks is how close they were to making it to the runway. Talk about fate. Thanks again. Watching this again, I guess the right engine is ok, but because these pilots have had experience with odors from different engines for different parts of the plane, they shut down the good engine and were using the bad left side engine. So,twas basically a mixed responsibility of bad engines and bad responses to the bad engine. You did say the vibration gauge was pinned in the high end. That should have been a warning to the pilots. None of the gauges in the right hand engine were out of normal. Another pilot error. I still say little rear view mirrors, showing the engines to the pilots may be beneficial. Still very sad.

Unfortunately, it cost those innocent lives for that one stubborn Florida pilot to learn his lesson. Now he's flying a different set of wings. Or not. I really like your videos.   53. I'm assuming more flaps would not have helped as long as he still had 1 engine still not at idle. That seems to be hard to miss wouldn't it have? I guess flying becomes a lot like driving a car. You do it so much it becomes mundane and get complacent. And that's when mistakes are made.

I mean 600 tons being held up by air? Miracles. But like I said. I live in Florida, and we don't know what snow is. And the only ice is in our tea and iced coffee. Haha.   58. Yes it seems between the storm and stress related human reaction, the outcome was inevitable. But I did think on landing and take offs, pilots are totally strapped in, including shoulder restraints. So the Capt falling forward on the yoke and throttle, would be very hard to do. Though it seems the only explanation for the throttle to be fully engaged. The yoke i can see, but the throttle? Like u said, once they were committed to touchdown, throttle would be at idle yes? With both hands on the wheel? Anyway, I know hindsight is 20,20. And because the recorder was down, there are no answers. I am highly happy, that everyone survived the initial crash. After that ride, it's a miracle. And with only 1 post accident death, another miracle. Mostly seems everything was due to the weather. I can only imagine the pilots thought, when seeing 0 landing lights. With everything else happening, he had to be in shear panic. I hadn't seen this one.   60. So when you are on the runway and using the pedals to steer. What do they do? Breaking or steering the front wheel? Shows that, even with the auto pilot, there is still things for a human to do, flying or landing a huge plane.

  61. Very sad. I'm surprised the speed control being as visible as they are the co pilot didn't see the lever moving out of line with it's partner. But i guess the levers aren't as large as they seem. But yes the lever moving back wards by itself is a terrible continuing occurrence that should never be allowed to go unrepaired like it was. Pilot's have so much going on to have to have a defect like that to think about constantly.

  65. I too am glad to hear there was no loss of life. I'm assuming as long as you have thrust and hydraulics you have all physical controls? But the brakes are electrically operated somehow? Very glad however, they were able to go around and land as well as they did. Kudos to the crew.

  66. But the mesh would have sure saved the life of the person in your video where a luggage loader or maintenance person got sucked into the engine. I have to figure the mesh idea has been thought about since the development of jet engines. Also, with a mesh screen, one bird may not do much to slow intake, but a flock certainly may. I remember in a couple of your video's, a multiple bird strike did create issues with the operation of an engine, to the point of shut down. It seems the idea of a screen is kinda a catch 22.
