Taiwan didn’t need an auto mfg industry but yes, it helps a lot. My understanding is that auto manufacturing requires lots of secondary suppliers and is also generally high labor wages in addition to spurring innovation that can be used for other industries. It’s why China put lot of focus on it last few years …seeing what it did for Japan and South Korea

@carlramirez6339 Yes, but I left those out because they are much smaller economies. Even Taiwan is not as big as SK but it's still about 50% the size at 24m or so. Singapore, Israel, Ireland all under 10m population. Makes me wonder what larger countries (if any) recently went into upper income without a decent automotive industries

II literally spent the rest of that post after the first sentence showing how a an auto mfg industry does help a lot and why we often see an economy take off when their auto industry flourishes. For the most part, you basically repeated everything I said where I discussed how auto industry requires a lot of suppliers and that the labor is generally higher wage. So we agree.
