I think it was just general curiosity when the question was asked. I think her passport was used to register her name as a British citizen the moment she married Harry but, she clearly got it back in order to get back into the US. Her passport was probably used to get paperwork done for Harry to join and live with her in the States. I don’t think she understand how Customs works and how her passport was used to help them to live in either country or how long it takes to process the paperwork.
