  2. The US aren't a side in this war but an ally of Ukraine (very powerful), I think, and most probably don't want to stop the war soon (actually just for the stability in the region sensu largo - until Russia is weakened enough).

Anyway, the first way I can think the distance was reduced were invasions of the Soviet Union, this made many countries apply for NATO membership after being liberated, so it's not the case of the threat to Russia, it's the other way around. Boris Yeltsin was ok with that, early V. Putin also, wait, apparently Finland's and Sweden's access isn't a problem according to the words of the latter (I know, 'Words, words, words...') In 2014 when Russian secret services started hybrid war in Crimea as 'the little green men' and doon soon after that in Donbas there was no talk about NATO, Actually not long ago on Bucharest Summit Ukraine's chances to be accepted were ruled out.
