  1. Captain was grossly incompetent, throughout the entire transcript he is heard trying to downplay any threat and trying to use positive self talk about it as if that'll make a difference in the weather, even at one point using the phrase "knock on wood" after saying they'll be fine.

  2. They should have, but that's hindsight. It's always more complicated than it seems. You usually never imagine a tragic disaster could really happen to you until it's happening, and by then it's too late. They can't just err on the side of caution and take the ship from the captain's control until they're positive they're doomed. For crews to do this whenever they're scared or questions a captain's judgement would have serious repercussions. Whoever put this totally incompetent captain at the helm is responsible.
