I'm someone who's loved driving for 55 years now. One of the best things I've done to save money and not get ripped off in life is to educate myself about the operation and basic maintenance of my vehicles. That's why I'm an ardent DIY'er and subscriber to this channel. We are but Grasshoppers to AMD the Master.

Good to know there are still people in this world who are conscientious in the things that they do. I have no doubt the shop will be a big success.

Actually, my 2012 Prius Plug-In drives very well. I've taken it on several 1200 mile trips and it is solid and holds the road well.

I believe that holding the key to the start button (when the battery in the key is dead) uses NFC (near field communication). The signal transmitted from the car is used to provide electrical power to the chip in the key so it can respond.

My father after 70 years of accident free driving and no tickets wandered across a double yellow line for a second when going around a curve. A cop stopped him and ticketed him. When his automobile insurance came due for renewal, his premium had doubled due to that ticket. He cancelled with them (GEICO) and went with someone else.

At first I thought: "Wow, what a dirty filter", then realized the material is gray? What happened to light colored filters that are easy to see when they are dirty?

I was raised during the era of Rochester 2 barrel, Holley 3 and 4 barrel carbs. Always fun to clean, tweak or refurbish them. I later had a '74 Porsche 914 with Bosch fuel injection. I drove it cross country in the summer and had 5 or 6 unscheduled stops through California, Arizona and New Mexico due to vapor lock. I eventually replaced it with Weber carbs and it ran great after that. That particular year fuel injection had lots of problems. Looking forward to Part Deux.

I've always had good luck with Michelin, Bridgestone or Goodyear. Over 40 years, I've never had a blow out due to manufacturing defects or premature wear.
22
Most non-religious people do the right thing also.

When I was younger and travelled on business with co-workers, they would always treat their rentals like race cars. When it's a big faceless corporation, apparently consideration for others' property goes out the window.

Last year, I was getting a "lean" code on my 2002 1MZ-FE Highlander. Cleaned the MAF but code came back. I found Toyota Technical Support Bulletin EG-5014, followed the procedure, and found the long term fuel trims for both banks were out of spec. The MAF data (g/sec) was also out of spec per the procedure, indicating a bad sensor. Replaced it and life is good.

Start/stop works great on my Prius and I'm used to it. However, it is usually crap when they put it on non-hybrids with the delay and engine shudder on the restart.
14
20 year old Highlander no major repairs and 266,000 miles......almost there! Even has original suspension. 2025: At 290,000 miles. Still no major repairs, I replaced the left rear shock recently after the old one started leaking.

Always satisfying to sit down with a fresh, hot cup a joe in the morning and watch a new TCCN video. Afterwards, I always run out to the garage to say good morning to my two new babies and to see if there's anything they need. Happy Holidays to all.
13
I use a moisture meter to check water content of my brake fluid.

@robertmaybeth3434 I've lived in S. Cal (Orange County) for the last 44 years. Still love driving.

People who buy Tesla's don't care about quality That way they avoid disappointment.
11
CarFax and a trusted mechanic can do a lot to alleviate any anxiety in that respect BEFORE you buy.

Starting my 23rd DIY year with my 2002 Highlander w/289,000 miles. Most invasive teardown done to date was for the knock sensors replacement. Rock on 1MZ-FE!
10
Does short trips without always getting to FOT exacerbate the EGR clogging? Great video!
9
Easy. Live in Arizona.

Glad for this video. My 2002 Highlander with 270,000 miles has the original struts/shocks all around. They aren't leaking, no noise and no excessive "bounce".
8
2002 Highlander with original suspension at 260,000 miles, still rides like it came off the showroom floor. Living in S. Cali. helps keep your car rust free. Now at 289,000 miles...left rear strut started leaking badly. Replaced with Toyota part (made by KYB).
8
It's the pressure and medium that cleans the part. Water temp doesn't matter.
7
Same here....2002 Highlander, 282K miles. Purrs like a kitten.
7
I replaced the thermostat on my 2002 1MZ-FE along with other work, i.e., knock sensors. Forgot to slide and tighten a coolant hose clamp. Wife called me next day saying the car was overheating. Luckily she shut it down soon enough to avoid any damage. That was my latest DIY lesson: inspect, inspect, inspect. Especially when it involves critical components/fluids.
7
I assume all of the carbon build up on the valves was because of the oil bypassing the rings?
6
The "plug-in" battery in my 2012 Prius Plug-In gave me ~12.5 miles in EV mode at normal speed (~65mph) when new. After one year, it went down to 9.5 miles of range. That's a 27% drop in range after 12 months. I stopped charging it after that and just run in ECO mode now.
6
Gas isn't getting any cheaper so the mileage is a deal breaker for me.
6
Which is why I do the fluid changes myself.
6
2012 Prius Plug-In hybrid with 150,000 miles....still running like a Swiss watch. Only normal "wear and tear" maintenance needed so far. However, I paid a premium since it was the first year for the plug-in hybrid......$40K out the door.
6
@MultimediaM-mu9vf Is that why my two Toyotas with 500,000 cumulative miles still run like clocks?
5
The law in most states is a used car is sold "as is". A smart buyer has the car checked by a 3rd party mechanic before buying.
5
I've seen a ton of salt all over the last few cars you've made videos on. Another reason I'm glad I live in a warm southern climate. And this is why I hate sunroofs.
5
Maybe I misunderstood, but SOFTER compounds are great for summer/DRY conditions as they give the best grip. Hard compounds have less grip but longer life (for the same conditions).
5
I have a European car and on the first oil change at the dealership, they overfilled the oil by TWO QUARTS. I noticed now I have a leak from the area of the rear main seal. I changed the oil myself and put the right amount and cleaned up oil from the leak. If it continues to leak, it's going to a different dealership for warranty repair, which is ridiculous for a car with less than 5000 miles.

My son is a Toyota service manager....he gets me good discounts on everything I buy....:) Great information though.
5
400,000 miles is like driving around the earth at the equator 16 times.
5
Been following this kind of maintenance for years. 2002 1MZ-FE just about to hit 300,000 miles. Runs like factory new.
5
2002 Highlander (1MZ-FE) 290,000 miles, 2012 Prius Plug-In (2ZR-FXE) 150,000 miles.....both going strong with no issues.
4
Original owner of a 1MZ-FE 2002 Highlander. Almost at 300,000 miles. All major steering/suspension/engine parts are original. Still runs and feels like new.
4
Wow, surprised my 2012 Plug-In had NO input filter whatsoever. Got into the trunk to examine the two cooling fans and they were pristine even after almost 10 years. Went to dealer and bought the outside mesh input filter.
4
Darn, he didn't mention the 2002 Highlander 1MZ-FE.....mine has 245,000 miles and still truckin' like a boss.
4
Oh darn...I love the cruise control stalk (on my Highlander and Prius). Easy to get to, convenient and SAFE. I can easily operate it without taking my eyes off the road.
4
I'm going to help my son rebuild his second S2000. Latest one had scored cylinders when he bought it, so he's getting a new short block.
4
My 22 year old Highlander with 282,000 miles has the original alternator.
4
A mother at my grandkids' elementary school left her young son in the car by himself while she went to the admin office. I had to track her down and caution her (it's illegal here in California). Maybe an automated rear seat reminder would have helped her avoid the situation.
4
My 2012 Prius (135Kmi) Plug-In hybrid battery is 11 years old and still going strong. I'm hoping it will continue to be so for at least another 4 years.
4
Cars with an 8 speed transmission all seem to want to get to 8th gear ASAP. I'm assuming it's another path to higher gas mileage and lower emissions.
4
"Television" had ads from its very beginnings. I hate them as much as you do but broadcasters are not nonprofit companies. Thank goodness for the mute button, eh?
