“Actually you don’t ‘lead’ a ‘herd’ of sheep. You drive what’s known as a ‘flock’ of sheep from behind.” -A. Shepherd

@IkedaSerra Well, it was only incidental that grammar came into question. I was more pointing out the technical aspects of moving sheep. They’re not actually very easily lead and are much more easily chased. Speaking as a long time fan of British TV show ‘One Man and his Dog’, I should know. A ‘drove’ of sheep. Drove is also a collective noun for a group of sheep. Fairly antiquated now I would imagine. But like I say, herd is apparently perfectly acceptable now too. So many people using the term incorrectly eventually at some stage the rest of the world has thrown up it’s hands and said whatever. No point swimming against the tide, I guess.

@IkedaSerra Early in the morning? Way hay and up she rises, way hay and up she rises, ear-lie in the morning? Shave his belly with a rusty razor, Shave his belly with a rusty razor, Ear-lie in the morning! Put him in the bed with the librarian’s daughter, put him in the bed with the librarian’s daughter, Early in the morning!

@IkedaSerra How’d you guess? That was the lyrics to ‘What should we do with the drunken sailor’ in case you didn’t know. Or should that be ‘those were the lyrics’ ? I dunno, you tell me. That’s a grammar conundrum there. Anyway, I can throughly recommend ‘One Man and his Dog’ as absolute television gold. British sheepdog trials. “Away! Come by! Peep! Peep! Lie down! Lie down! Hey! He-ey!” and all that. I swear to God it is simultaneously some of the most chilled out and also some of the most tense television ever. It’s basically watching some shepherd representing his country commanding his dog to move some sheep around to score points. Fantastic television. Honestly, it’s great to watch. No lie.

@IkedaSerra Actually a ‘herd’ of sheep is also apparently perfectly acceptable these days. Puts the ‘herd’ into shep’herd’. Although , imo, herding would technically be the activity done by the shepherd, and not a reference to the collective noun. Saying a shepherd was ‘flocking’ his sheep obviously would have never sounded right. Bit too suggestive. Anyway, sheep would be notoriously difficult to lead unless you happened to be another sheep in which case they all seem to run after one another. The stupidest of farm animals but I like to think they’re fairly happy creatures

@IkedaSerra No, honestly, sometimes those shepherds have two dogs on the go at the one time and just by standing at the top of the hill shouting and whistling they get the to ‘fetch’ and ‘lift’ the sheep and move them through gates , stand altogether in one spot for so long and move them all into a pen. All while being timed. How it was ever imagined that could be done and what a massively huge part of someone’s life it must be to be able to do it is just amazing to me. And so relaxing to watch.
