Is that a good thing? Big tech billionaires get to decide who they turn into non-persons?

Clay Baker I wasn’t really making an argument I was just curious as to how people in the comments felt an thought about an issue like this. I’m more inclined to think that the right to free speech includes the right to hate speech with the exception of incitement to violence or to commit a crime. Not that I want hate speech but rather that I’d be concerned that what constitutes hate speech may change over time

@sillyrabbit734 I happen to be one of those people who have no social media accounts. No FB no Twitter no email even and I get along just fine but I’m not trying to reach a wider audience. Big tech enjoys current protections because they claim to be platforms not publishers and therefore (rightfully) shouldn’t be held liable for what someone else chooses to post and should have a right to remove hateful or harmful content. When big tech chooses to censor people just because they have differing opinions from what tech seeks to promote that’s different because they’re not providing an equal service to everybody and are in effect becoming publishers that they’re claiming not to be.

@Droogie128 Well we both know if someone was running a restaurant it’d be wrong to refuse to serve someone on the basis of their race. Do you think if someone is running a hotel or a guest house they have the right to refuse to let a same sex couple stay in double bed? Do you agree that bakers, florists and photographers should be allowed to refuse their services for same sex weddings?

@mesothelimoa341 Hmm? Might be sorta ok, maybe? Not sure, suppose it depends what for. I mean North Korea, China, Iran and various members of their governments have social media accounts, though they are sovereign nations. There’s other examples like Hezbollah, Antifa and I’m sure loads of other militant religious, nationalistic or Marxist. Militant environmental or animal protection groups even. So yeah maybe I’m ok with Isis or Boko Haram having a Facebook page and Twitter account or whatever. It would allow for some measure of dialogue and shed a little insight into a groups motivations and membership for security services as much as anything else

@Droogie128 Tech platforms enjoy protections from liability for content posted on their sites because they claim to be platforms not publishers. And rightfully so as far as I’m concerned. Specific discrimination includes discriminating against them because of their religious or political beliefs which is what tech companies are frequently accused of doing

@mesothelimoa341 Well you haven’t seen yet so 🤪

@mesothelimoa341 No that’s not what I said. I never said anything about unrestricted access I simply recognize the efficacy of being able to better understand the motivations and intentions. I’m also well aware of the benefits of having unofficial lines of communication with such groups in order to persuade them to cease their activities

Was hardly a coup now was it?
