The '5 invasions' omit the equally bloody dozens of raids and invasions against Moscow by the Crimean Khanate staged from across the Dnieper. The area of Ukraine Russia is aiming is precisely that area,a vast open land that opens the way to core russian population centre and is a historical soft underbelly. Think of eastern anatolia to Turkey,or east prussia to Poland

@elitav5491 Russian government's perspective is not 'retarded'. 1).Ukraine has the most productive farmland in the entire novorossiya belt, which is important considering that Russian agriculture is on the decline due to poverty of farmers and lack of arable land 2.)Ukraine is easy picking, comparable to Sudetenland or Poland back in WW2. Dystopic, impoverished former dictatorships with a lot of Russian speaking people that can be incentivized to be Kremlin loyalists 3).Annexing half of Ukraine will pave a steady connection to Crimea, granting Russia a warm water port and access to the Black Sea 4.Putin's popularity skyrocketed after his previous succeses in Checnya,Donbas, and Syria. In his mind a successful war = good rating and he needs a good rating to counter the effect of covid restrictions, worsening economy and Navalny's poisoning Unfortunate that Putin's decision will likely result in the deaths of hundreds of thousands of people, but there is a difference between what is morally good and what is good from an utilitarian sense

Why should Putin fear EU? Germany is one of Putin's largest customer especially under the German 'East-politic' strategy and the rest of Europe other than the Poles and Baltics is either apathetic or have a bonhomie with Putin who they viewed as a partner against terrorism(especially right wing eu members)
