Britain did not do it out of a sense of suicidal benevolence or responsibility to the former colonies,as your comment patronisingly implies. Most of these people also lived horribly,in slums and treated like vagrants or paddies by the power that be (just look at Sadiq Khan's childhood) their ability to survive and thrive in Britain happened in spite of the state,and not because of any handouts

This is true.A monarch that is partial and uninvolved with politics can act as a safeguard far more effectively than any elected presidents Just look at Pakistan,their president who are supposed to safeguard against electoral tyranny ilegally dissolve the parliament to preserve the ruling party(to which he belongs) from a no confidence motion That's the sort of mess a parliamentary democracy gets when the head of state is involved in active politic,which is the case in most republican parliamentary states
