The native name for Singapore is "Singapura" which means lion city. Singa means lion in indonesian and malay and it is derived from Sanskrit, and "pura" means city which derives from Sanskrit also... languages of indonesia and malay was heavily influenced by sanskrit. The new word "Singapore" was invented by britishers to simplify their pronounciation

up to down the word "singa" is also used in indonesian and malay for "Lion" because it is derived from sanskrit. The native malay name for Singapore is 'Singapura', "Pura" is from sanskrit which means "city". In India the "a" is not pronounced as it is only spelt "pur" such as the city of Jaipur, Jodhpur, Burhanpur, Bahawalpur, etc. In Indonesia "a" is pronounced thus it becomes like the city: Martapura, Jayapura, Semarapura, Amlapura, etc
