  1. I think Putin did it to score some domestic points so he doesn't get overthrown when he (hopefully soon) loses the battlefield in Ukraine. He wants people in Russia to think, "well, it would be nice to swap prisoners more, let's try to wrap up this war in Ukraine early."

He wants Russians to think, "well, it is nice to do more of these prisoner exchanges. Let's wrap up this war early and get back to the way things were before under pappa Putin."
