I have a hard time understanding China's support of them as well Josh Cook but if I could give my best guess I would say that north Korea and the fall of it represent a huge ideological defeat and that China considers north Korea as a tool to use still. I think of north Korea not far removed from China both are into controlling people and ideas. I also think of north Korea as China's rabid dog that they keep chained up in the backyard but cant figure out what to do with because the love it but its getting sick and crazy.
