@JaneGalvin you realise Vietnam was a while ago, right? Missile tech, sensors etc have all moved on a lot since then. You might as well be saying the longbow is the way to go, because just look how it performed at Agincourt. Tech moves on.

The in-service target is 2035, and it is on schedule currently with a demonstrator due in the next 2 years
3
@johnpapa1916 the F-4 also didn't have all-aspect missiles, and Vietnam was a long time ago, time to move on
3
They do, a basic look at the spending and efforts in those areas shows that.
3
@col.waltervonschonkopf69 yes. Look at how much of the national budget goes on health and social care, how extensive the benefit/welfare system is (even after over a decade of cuts by the Tories, it's still strong), how much greenhouse emissions have dropped in the last 30 years (52% since 1992)
3
The F-23 doesn't exist
3
No, you cannot target aircraft using satellites. You might be able to locate them slightly easier, but only slightly, and even then you can't target them.
3
@jeromedamian5740 essentially no different to triangulation by ground-based sensors, and relies on the aircraft transmitting, which they don't do much of unless really required to, when under strict EMCON.

@JaneGalvin I see the point that you're stuck in the past. Guns were used because missiles either didn't exist, or because they were not good enough to engage an enemy in any situation. We now have all-aspect, high off boresight missiles that make the idea of going to guns on an enemy's tail almost completely redundant. We didn't have that in Vietnam, which is why guns played a role.

@johnpapa1916 about what?
2
Different uses. AI is far better at large data processing and interpretation than a human, in the same way a scientific calculator is better at solving difficult equations. Doesn't remove the need for smart people to work alongside it though.
2
What are you talking about? They have the budget for the next order of F-35 already ringfenced
2
The UK, and various iterations of states on the British Isles previously, were literally founded and built on immigration.

@paulwood6729 austerity isn't a myth, it was just targeted to hit the poorest hardest. Between 2010 and 2019 more than £30 billion in spending reductions were made to welfare payments, housing subsidies, and social services. Between 2012 and 2019, the number of children receiving food from food banks tripled. There was no central function or risk assessment made to predict the impact of the austerity programme on services and budgets in the long term. There were however "big strategic moves" to protect groups more likely to vote Conservative, and make cuts elsewhere. This meant that the richest 20% of the population were largely protected. A report by the Arts Council England revealed that arts and culture had suffered a £236 million (20%) decline from 2010 to 2020. By 2023 arts council funding had declined 63% in Northern Ireland, 21% in Wales, and 30% in England. Shortsighted people like to say that the arts are a frivolous waste of money, ignoring the massive revenues generated by successful film, TV and other entertainment media worldwide. Look at the massive recent surge in S Korean media being exported globally for clear evidence of that. These are just a few examples.

They're shielded, like most military aircraft. The actual practicalities of an EMP mean they don't work as well in practice as science fiction would have you believe
2
That won't fulfil the roles being asked of Tempest

@Scaadoo QRA, for a start. A bomber would be totally ill equipped to fly QRA, and doing so with CCA would mean scrambling more aircraft every time, which is a needless drain on resources. For a B-21/CCA combo to remain reasonably low observable, they'd also need to remain pretty close due to the limited range of LO datalinks like MADL (which are LO due to high atmospheric attenuation), which means putting a manned bomber close to any action you want the CCA involved in. Not a great idea.
2
Visual camouflage isn't really very important in a BVR fighter. The whole camera-camo screen arrangement is just sci-fi, not really practical in any way.
2
Not really, it's progressing as planned within the MOD alongside Japan/Italy.

@realhorrorshow8547 I love the word 'obsolete', because it allows easy identification of people who don't understand what the word actually means, but like to throw it around in defence contexts as if it is true 😂

Baseless speculation

@paulwood6729 defence spending fell in real terms across the tory government's time in office. The reason the raw numbers got larger is due to inflation. The fact some people can't grasp that basic concept is frightening.

We have 34 F-35B already, with a total of 48 on order, and a ring-fenced budget for 72 in total so far.

@Badboy-lv9qj sure, whatever you say
