Because they fill a lot of the necessary admin roles that never deploy for a lower cost than a service person. They also don't count towards the total set military personnel count, which means the MOD can employ more personnel within the limits set for it.

The good thing about an audio-only podcast is that you don't have to keep watching the screen

The point of 'no vote, no say' is that you have no right to complain about the the state of your government if you didn't even bother to engage in democracy by voting

The EU have no control of our armed forces. We're not even a member of it 😂

@scroggins100 can you make that first part more coherent?

This is blatantly false. The migrant/refugee costs (around £4bn) come from the existing overseas aid budget (around £15bn). The armed forces alone gets over £50bn, and has just received a £3bn increase from the budget. That doesn't even factor in the budgets of things like intelligence services, etc. We also haven't given away a "strategically vital" island. We have kept the actually strategically important base.

@chieftandriver703 so you're literally admitting you're incorrect, then? £4bn on migrant/refugee processing as part of a total £15bn budget is way lower than a >£55bn defence budget. No new money was allocated to migrants, it has come from the existing overseas aid budget, so you're claiming that £0 is somehow more than the defence uplift of £3bn.

@chieftandriver703 there's nothing 'woke' (the favourite word of the under educated) about understanding basic maths. The armed forces had £55bn spent on them last year, with a £3bn uplift in this budget. Migrant/refugee costs are around £4bn, but from an existing aid budget of £15bn, with no additional uplift. Even if the migrant crisis went away overnight, that £15bn aid budget wouldn't be spent on defence, as it's literally ringfenced for aid, so no idea what you're whinging about. The facts are that the MOD has way more money spent on it than migrants, is getting a way larger uplift than migrant spending (which is getting zero uplift) and that the money spent on migrants has no impact whatsoever on defence spending as it comes from an entirely separate existing budget.
