  2. The UK never scrapped its air defence, it just operates on a different doctrine to countries that use a lot of SAMS on home soil. The UK operates QRA to keep the threat at range, with Sky Sabre for close in protection (alongside T45), and also routinely works alongside other nations for things like Russian bomber interception and monitoring.

  3. Defence against ballistic missiles is entirely possible. Interceptors don't need to chase incoming warheads, just get in the way of them as they approach. Ballistic missiles get detected pretty much instantly on launch by BMEWS and space-based IR, and their trajectories are relatively easy to calculate and track.

  17. They're not a game changer. Ballistic missiles and kinetic penetrators/bunker busters have been around for decades. The US and others used loads of bunker busters in Iraq and other conflicts to excellent effect. As for them doing the damage of a nuke, that's a frankly ridiculous claim.

They fly on arcing ballistic paths into space, so are easily detected by BMEWS and other systems, and interceptors can meet them on their descent. It's not the super-weapon Russians seem to imagine. Their hypersonic speed is simply a function of basic physics, and terminal velocity. Nearly all ballistic missiles are hypersonic.
