@Philljag not really, breweries extorting pubs for profit did most of the damage
7
Modern petrol engines can handle 20mph just fine
6
Sounds like you need to learn how gears work, that's the main issue here
5
That's exactly what's happening, Labour are handing the power to decide to councils
5
@Philljag greater alcohol education and a societal change amongst the younger generations away from traditional pubs also did that, but brewery damage to pubs, as well as investor greed/chains, have done a lot of harm too. And to be fair, if pubs couldn't survive the smoking ban due to a failure to remain relevant or appealing, that's on them. I shouldn't have to endure sitting in a stinking room to enjoy an evening out just because someone else made a bad life choice and got addicted to nicotine.
5
You clearly haven't paid attention previously then.
3
@Philljag no, the stats are just misleading when you look at the bigger picture. We spend that amount directly on smoking, but it doesn't reflect the fact that if people took more responsibility for their life choices (obesity, alcoholism, smoking etc) a huge percentage of hospital admissions wouldn't need to happen in the first place, reducing the need for more wards, reducing the infrastructure cost, staff cost, etc etc.
2
They already are
2
Wrong, but nice try 😂
2
No, no one is suggesting that. Feel free to keep making things up though

Knew we couldn't trust the polar bears
1
Amazing that you lived through over a decade of disastrous tory rule and you think this government are worse 😂 human rights are still intact, as is democracy. What isn't allowed is hate speech or inciting racial hatred, which frankly has no place in society anyway
1
No one is forcing anyone to stay inside, just to not smoke in pub gardens. The hysteria from the usual crowd is embarrassing
1
@Dylan-y6n that's a separate issue, and one that has been addressed massively in recent years. Doesn't detract from the issue of smoking.
1
@Dylan-y6n a huge amount has and is being done to reduce vehicle emissions, but transportation is a key driver of the economy. Smoking, on the other hand, does nothing but cause preventable cancers, respiratory illnesses and a whole host of health issues
1
@Dylan-y6n they should be allowed to smoke in private, but not where their smoke will affect others. Why should I have to avoid beer gardens because someone else made a bad life choice and decided to smoke something that smells foul? We should also be discouraging smoking generally, due to the damage it does to health.
1
@Dylan-y6n it's legal for now, but hopefully not much longer
1
@Philljag those figures don't take into account the sheer work burden, needless waste of beds, staff hours, etc etc
1
"Sharia laws" 😂 I'm guessing you have no idea what that actually means, beyond whatever Tommy Robinson has told you
1
@ryantate6447 do you actually understand what that means? None of it applies here
1
@garyneedham1282 that's not a ban issue, its an enforcement issue. It is far harder to stop the small percentage of people carrying and using knives and drugs than it is to stop the masses of people who smoke doing so in public spaces
1
@glennbobey6332 nicotine is the addictive element. The concentration of nicotine is massively different in cigarettes vs tomatoes.
1
Most roadworks occur overnight as its far safer for the workers and causes less disruption to motorists. The limits are in place during the day due to the presence of the barriers, machinery, etc.
1
More smokers end up in hospital for entirely preventable long-term reasons than health freaks do
1
Are they?
1
True in the short term, but over the long term the NHS would be far less burdened and it would save millions
1
Not really, they're giving more power to local authorities
