They were the most rock and roll out of any of the so called grunge bands. They are better than Pearl Jam who they were unfairly compared to.

Or Bill Ward.

Anyone who doesn't like Hitch a Ride is a fuckhead.

@kingkeefage Wakeman definitely played on Sabbra Caddabra. Tony could play keyboards to an extent but not well enough to do the piano outro on Sabbra Caddabra. I don't think Ozzy knows how to play an instrument other than the harmonica on Wizard. I never heard of Bill playing them but he may have. Wakeman and Sabbath go way back and his son was the touring keyboardist on their recent tours.

@kingkeefage On the album they had a fake name for him and he insisted on being paid in beer.
2
The NIN version is way better.

Maybe Jeff Hanneman. His grotesque soundscape solos were something different. The guys from Iron Maiden and Judas Priest are a glaring omission too. Billy Duffy from The Cult. I don't know how talented he was but at least their music stands out in that decade stylistically.
2
@JonathanRingo Yeah. I haven't ever dug too deep on the Cult but they have a bunch of great songs that Duffy co wrote. I will take a riff maker/tasteful player over a shredder any day.

@theonlydjtopcat Fuck yes. That drum sound is epic on that song.

Soundgarden, Prong, White Zombie, Deftones

For mainstream music Hot Blooded has kind of a wacky solo.

Producers to get on. Mutt Lange Terry Date Alan Parsons Bob Ezrin Daniel Lanois Bruce Fairbairn Dave Jerden

He played on Sabbra Caddabra too. Pretty cool piano at the end of that one. I think he may have played on other Sabbath stuff but I'm not sure.

Talks to Angels by the Black Crowes. That and Love Song by Tesla are the two I thought of instantly. Finish What You Started by Van Halen. Silent Lucidity by Queensryche. Mama I'm Coming Home by Ozzy Osbourne. I Remember You by Skid Row. There are tons of them.

Before watching this video my answer is grunge. The bands were great but they had an economy to their playing and songwriting that inspired legions of hacks to form bands with only a rudimentary knowledge of how to play their instruments.
1
It's the songwriting that's been the problem.
1
If Dogman is your single then you aren't going very far.

@sharpvidtube Good point. Look at all those great bands from the late 60s to early 70s. Led Zeppelin had two albums in 1969. Five albums in five years. Sabbath had two albums in 1970 and six albums in six years. Pink Floyd had eight albums in seven years when they finally hit is big with Dark Side of the Moon. Strike while the iron is hot, have two or three singles and have your next album ready before the first one trails off.

Terry Date. Andy Wallace. Ted Templeman. Bob Rock. Bruce Fairbairn. Alan Parsons. etc

I think there were more better artists in those past decades and I think young people can also recognize that. I was a teenager in the 90s and I always thought the 70s was the best decade for music and I still think that. I played music for a guy at work 20 years my junior and he preferred music from the 90s to what was is on offer now. This is especially true in rock. I think music was just better then. I mean isn't Mozart better than most later classical composers? Are there not golden periods for architecture and painting?
1
I think they and the Latin ones are breaking in the US because of changing demographics moreso than talent.
1
Since you are doing all this '90s stuff including metal how about some White Zombie More Human than Human? It has everything. Legendary producer Terry Date. Great drum sound. Unique slide guitar. Electronic samples. Movie samples. It's one of the biggest hits of the decade and very unorthodox.
1
If you're twenty and you've been playing an instrument for ten or fifteen years then you've had lots of time to get really good and you have lots of time left to get a real job if your band doesn't work out. You've got lots of energy and no responsibilities. It's the sweet spot.

Aerosmith 1974 to 2001

Usually it's up to someone to come along and break the mold.
1
Yeah. Ozzy is a shitty technical singer but so is Kurt Cobain. Ozzy has or had an uncanny ability to sing the right thing at the right time. And a very unique voice and delivery.
