Watergate: Nixon
Watergate concerns US President Richard Nixon (R-CA) who ordered the burglary of the offices of the Democratic National Committee at the complex. The object was to plant a Covert listening device in the office and learn who inside his own administration was leaking information. The burglars were discovered and arrested. Nixon tried to cover up both the burglary, the bugging, and the full extent of other illegal acts by his close staff. The cover up resulted in 69 government officials being charged and 48 being convicted or pleading guilty. Eventually, Nixon resigned his office rather than face trial.
Operation Mockingbird: Spy on reporters
In a plot worthy of an Orwell novel, the CIA spied on two reporters between March and June 1963, who, according to the agency, disclosed sensitive national security information in national newspapers.
Operation Mockingbird was a secret Central Intelligence Agency campaign to influence media beginning in the 1950s. Organized by Cord Meyer (a CIA official) and Allen W. Dulles (Director of Central Intelligence) in the 1950s, it was later led by Frank Wisner (Directorate of Plans of the CIA) after Dulles became head of CIA. The organization recruited leading American journalists into a network to help present the CIA’s views, and funded some student and cultural organizations, and magazines as fronts. As it developed, it also worked to influence foreign media and political campaigns, in addition to activities by other operating units of the CIA.
The CIA noted that the project was “particularly productive in identifying contacts of the newsmen…including senators, members of Congress, and other well-placed individuals.”
The illegal activity, noted in documents declassified in 2007, included wiretaps on the reporters’ home and office telephones.
Elon Musk Releases Twitter Files; Biden’s
As thousands of Twitter documents are released on the company’s infamous censorship program, much has been confirmed about the use of back channels by Biden and Democratic officials to silence critics on the social media platform.
The Biden’s had long been accused of influence peddling, nepotism, and other forms of corruption. Moreover, the campaign was not denying that the laptop was Hunter Biden’s and key emails could be confirmed from the other parties involved. However, at the request of the “Biden team” and Democratic operatives, Twitter moved to block the story. It even suspended those who tried to share the allegations with others.
