  1. The ice roads were built to service the Diamond Mines in the North, I worked on the first Diamond mind project, Ekati. Those Ice roads were built in the Winter to haul heavy equipment to the Mine sites over frozen lakes and bogs. The cost of building permanent roads to the Arctic will be too prohibitive, you can’t eat diamonds. The Natives always travelled the frozen tundra before the Ice Roads were ever built. They use snowmobiles.
